Where Awakening Sparks Within Community

At Nahda, we strive for awakening. We seek to inspire meaningful change in the communities we serve through programs and services that inform, uplift, and empower. We are more than a center — we are a trusted destination, rooted in diversity, inclusion, and the belief that every individual carries the potential for greatness.
We uphold values of volunteering, social justice, peaceful coexistence, family integration, and social cohesion. We champion civic engagement, well-being, and the active participation of all.
By empowering and enabling — especially the vulnerable — we adopt self-motivation, nurture resilience, and strengthen the social fabric. Together, we build a more aware, connected, and compassionate community.

Our Story

The Origin Story: From a Promising Center to a Leading Community Organization– The Story of Al-Nahda in the Heart of Chicago

The story began in the early 1990s, when a group of pioneers from the Arab and Muslim communities in Chicago rose with hope and a deep sense of responsibility to fulfill their mission of serving their local community. They worked diligently to build bridges of communication with the various segments of society and sought to engage creatively in an environment strengthened by its diversity and enriched by its cultural plurality

From this spirit emerged the idea of establishing a local Islamic Center that would unite the Muslim community and serve as a spiritual, cultural, and social forum. Through their collaboration and persistent efforts, the Chicago Islamic Center was founded in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on West 63rd Street, where the majority of the Muslim and Arab population resided at the time, before their residential presence gradually shifted to the southern suburbs of the city. The Center was not just a mosque; it became an open space for intellectual dialogue, cultural engagement, and public involvement. It also remained attuned to regional and global developments and their impact on the local community.

From its inception, the center offered distinguished programs, including lectures and lessons, youth activities, Arabic and Quran education, and the celebration of Islamic occasions and holidays. At that time, it became a major gathering point for community members who had settled in that area.

Vision and Development

Toward a New Horizon

As the Arab and Muslim communities in Chicago expanded, particularly toward the southern suburbs, it became necessary to respond to the demographic and population shifts with a new vision aligned with evolving needs. Strengthening institutional work and expanding service offerings became essential.
The turning point came in 2014 with the opening of Al-Nahda Center in the city of Worth, marking an exceptional leap in structured Islamic work. The Center grew rapidly—especially in 2015—to become one of the leading nonprofit institutions offering comprehensive community programs. It serves not only as a prayer space but also as a hub for services that promote the well-being of the local community across various fields, including health, culture, education, social services, ethics, civic engagement, and more.

Among its most vital offerings are the medical clinic and the food pantry program, which provides food assistance to families in need. The Center also runs a weekend school focused on Arabic language instruction and Islamic education, alongside extracurricular activities that promote a culture of learning, critical thinking, exploration, and a passion for knowledge—all led by a distinguished group of highly qualified educators.
The center’s mission has gone beyond services. It now includes building strategic partnerships with community leaders, engaging with policy and decision-making circles, and actively participating in public events. The center plays its role as a nonprofit organization that advocates for just causes, and in defense of the values of justice and human rights around the world.

Steady Steps and Promising Transformations

Today, Al-Nahda Center continues its journey with confidence and is preparing for a new strategic phase that includes upcoming projects, facilities, and innovative services to be announced soon, further empowering its role as a pioneering institution that combines charitable work, cultural engagement, and active community participation.
